Arbroath Abbey's place in history has been secured by its use as the origin of the 'Letter' (or 'Declaration') of Arbroath. This document declaring Scottish Independence from rule by the English is regarded by some as the most important in Scotland's History.

Alloa (Town of) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25”x5” 16x12.5cm approx.

Alloa a town in Clackmannanshire is situated on a pleasant plain to the North of the Forth and hath a convenient Harbour for ships of burthen many of which come thither for Salt and Coals. A supply port which sheltered Queen Mary and her son James. They stayed in Alloa Tower the ancestral home of the Earls of Mar.

Ayr (Town of) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25”x5”, 16x12.5cm approx.

Aire (Scottish Gaelic: Inbhir Àir Mouth of the River Ayr) an ancient Town and the Chief Market-Place of the West of Scotland. Situated on a sandy plain it has a stately Church; a bridge with four arches joins it to the New Town situated on the North Side of the River.

Arbroath (Town of) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25”x5”, 16x12.5cm approx.

Aberbrothock, (Arbroath) is a town in Angus at the mouth of the Brothock (Burn). This view is from the South and the Historic town stretches from the Harbour Wall to the dwellings just past the ruins of Arbroath Abbey. Almost in the centre is the spire of Arbroath Parish church, double row of houses to front of view is Millgate. The road to Dundee is on right, passing over Lady Bridge to join Marketgate.

Bothwell (Castle of) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25”x5”, 16x12.5cm approx.

Situated in Lower Clydesdale, not far from the River of Clyde. Originally the home of the Earl of Forfar.

Brechin (Town of) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25”x5”, 16x12.5cm approx.

Brechin is a town on the banks of the South Esk in the shire of Angus; and is a Bishops See. A Stately Bridge of two Arches spans the River Esk. It is a considerable Market Town.

Culross (Abbey) after Slezer 1707 6.25”x5” 16x12.5cm approx.

Abbey founded 1217 by Malcolm Earl of Fife as a small Cistercian Monastery under Kinloss in Moray. Much was abandoned after the reformation. Part was taken over by the Parish Church in 1633.

Set in Ayrshire, it was originally founded by the Cluniac Abbey of Paisley, and had a very active life until the reformation.

Dryburgh (Abbey) after Slezer 1707 6.25”x5” 16x12.5cm approx.

Abbey established in 1150 but was damaged and restored several times in its history. It has become the last resting place of Sir Walter Scott & Field Marshall Haig whose home had been close by.

The engraving focuses on the Abbey and the Surrounding 'Scottish Border Country'. Founded by monks of the Premonstratensian Order from the mid 12th century.

The Castle of Dunbritton from Kilpatrick. It shows the very large rock on which the Castle sits. The town is set out below.

Dunblane (Cathedral) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25"x5”; 16x12.5cm approx.

A lot of the Cathedral was in ruins when this view was taken. Restoration took place in the late 1880's.

Prospect of the town of Dunblane. Viewed from across farmland and the Allan Water. It takes in the bridge leading to the Town at one end and the ruined Dunblane Cathedral at the other. Perthshire farmland on either side of the river has just been harvested, not gathered.

Fine view showing Dundee from the north with Fife in the background and the 'Silvery Tay' flowing between the two. It stands on a “most pleasant plain and is adorned with excellent buildings of all sorts.

Dunfermline (Town of) after Slezer 1707. Size: 6.25”x5”; 16x12.5cm approx.

Situated in the west of the Sheriffdom of Fife The Abbey church rises above the Town and to the right is what remained of the Abbey. The Palace was the birthplace of Charles 1 the last monarch to be born in Scotland. The Palace was last used by his son in 1651 who was later (in 1660) Charles 2nd.

Dedicated to St. Columba whose relics were moved here from Iona AD 850. Dunkeld has twice been badly destroyed and rebuilt.

This view was made from Birnam Hill and shows a rural scene with Dunkeld surrounded by by river, woods and mountains. The main buildings in the Perthshire town are Dunkeld House at the time the main residence of the Duke of Atholl.

Seen from the village of Dean, which is now part of the City, the Pentland hills are faintly visible behind the city spires, Heriots Hospital is to the right of the Castle Mound and the town stretches down from it.

Glasgow College after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5cm approx This View shows the buildings of Glasgow University in the High Street as they were when built in the 16th/17th century. They demolished these buildings in the 1870's. After they had built the new Glasgow University Buildings.

Haddington (Town of) after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x12.5cm approx. In this prospect the Travellers are on the road into Haddington from the South. Central to the view is St. Mary's Church on of Scotland's largest medieval Churches. Built 1400's it has long been known as 'Lamp of the Lothians'

Hamilton (Town of) after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x12.5cm approx. The town spreads over most of the width of the prospect. It takes its name from Hamilton Palace. Since 1400 the Palace was continuously improved only to be demolished in the 1920's.

Kelso (Abbey of) after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5cm approx. The abbey was established in 1128 by Tironensian Monks a Cistertian Order based at Tiron in France. This prospect shows some rebuilding, A school was added on the right in the 1600's only to be cleared away early in the 19th century.

Kelso (Town of) After Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5cm approx. It is thought that this prospect was done before the town was destroyed in 1684. A town in Teviotdale it was almost wholly destroyed by fire, but is now rebuilt and adorned with most stately buildings.

Linlithgow (Royal Palace of) after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5cm approx. In this view from the west, Linlithgow Palace rises above the Loch and Town. Mary Queen of Scots was born in the palace in 1542. The palace was gutted by fire in 1745 and has remained a ruin to this day.

Lothian and the Côté de Stony after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5cm approx. This a view of the Forth and the Town of Musselburgh and the suburb of Fisherrow tro the East. Along the Lothian Coast are the villages of Prestonpans and Longniddry.

Montrose (Town of) After Slezer 1707 6.25”x5” 16 x 12.5cm approx. A town in Angus at the mouth of the river Esk with a good harbour for large ships. The view is taken from a hill above the town and shows the Harbour approach, Montrose Basin and the channel with sailing ships connecting it to the sea.

Paisley (Town & Abbey of) After Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5cm approx. This was the most significant settlement in this part of the west of Scotland. The abbey was set up in 1163 and William Wallace was educated in the original building. An attractive Prospect.

Perth (Town of) After Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5 cm approx. This is a famous view of Perth looking across the River Tay it projects a view of one of the most prosperous and favoured towns in the Highlands. Its harbour is shown with sailing ships along its walls. The flooding of 1622 swept the old bridge away and this was not replaced until a hundred years later.

Roslin Chapel After Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5 cm approx. The Chappell of Roslin was founded by Dsir William St. Clair in 1446. Cromwell stabled his horses their. Roslin chapel has gained greater notoriety in recent years!

Scoon Town after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5 cm approx. Scoon, Scone or Skuyn sits in this wide sweeping plain to the east of Perth and was the place where Scottish kings were crowned.

St. Andrews Castle after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5 cm approx. Dating from the 1200's it was for a long time the main residence of the Town's bishops and archbishops. Ruined and rebuilt several times it eventually fell into neglect in the 1600's. Towards the end of the 17th century it became a ruin and has remained so ever since.

St. Andrews Cathedral after Slezer 1707 6.25”x 5” 16 x 12.5 cm approx. This view shows the remains of the cathedral at the end of the 17th century. We can see the tower of the Church of St. Rule and part of the ruins of the Castle of the St. Andrews.

Many buildings dominate the town including the ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral, the Tower of St. Salvator's College and Holy Trinity Church.
